Troubleshooting iPads That Fail to Connect to Cellular Networks

Sometimes, iPads can be temperamental and refuse to connect to their assigned carriers. Fortunately, these issues can usually be resolved with a few straightforward steps.

Preliminary Checks

Before troubleshooting, ensure the following conditions are met:

  1. Charged and Powered On: Verify that your iPads are fully charged and turned on.
  2. Wi-Fi Connectivity: Confirm the iPads are connected to a stable school or home Wi-Fi network.
  3. Carrier Identification: Locate the carrier label, typically found on the box or the back of the iPad. This will indicate whether the device is configured for AT&T or Verizon.

For AT&T iPads

AT&T-configured iPads automatically connect to the network when connected to Wi-Fi.

  • Normal Activation: The iPad should establish a connection within 5 minutes of being on Wi-Fi.
  • If Connection Fails: If the iPad does not connect within the specified time:
    • Contact the help desk and provide details about the issue.
    • Our team will assist in resolving it promptly.

For Verizon iPads

Verizon iPads require additional steps to establish a connection. Follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Submit a Ticket:

    • Notify the help desk that your Verizon iPad is unable to connect to cellular service.
    • Our team will derestrict the device, allowing it to connect to Verizon.
  2. Important Note:

    • During the derestriction process, the iPad will not have any content filtering or protections.
    • Do not distribute the device to students until it is fully configured and secured.
  3. Activate Cellular Plan:

    • Open the Settings app on the iPad.
    • In the left-hand column, tap Cellular.
    • On the right-hand side, tap Activate Cellular Plan....
  4. Scan the QR Code:

    • When prompted, use the iPad’s camera to scan the provided QR code.
  5. Connection Process:

    • The iPad will begin connecting to the Verizon network.

If Connection Issues Persist

If the iPad fails to connect to Verizon after following these steps:

  1. Double-check the QR code scanning process and cellular settings.
  2. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the help desk immediately.
    • This may indicate a problem beyond our control, requiring further investigation or escalation.

By adhering to these guidelines, most connectivity issues can be resolved quickly, ensuring your iPads are ready for use. Let us know if you encounter any difficulties, and we’ll be happy to assist.
