Enable automatic updates on iPads

Updates are important. They keep your device up-to-date with the latest security fixes, and sometimes include new features or tweaks that enhance or improve the usability of the device. However, sometimes the iPads don't update themselves, and can go for months on end without having downloaded the latest update.

To keep your devices up-to-date, you can enable automatic updates. This allows the device to download the update by itself, and install it overnight - all without you having to touch it.

Before you begin

It's important to note that your iPad must be connected to Wi-Fi. Because updates can be upwards of gigabytes in size, iPadOS restricts the downloading of updates to Wi-Fi only - so as not to run up the phone bill.

Enabling automatic updates

  1. In Settings, tap the General tab.
  2. In Software Update, tap the Automatic Updates bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Ensure that both Download iPadOS Updates and Install iPadOS Updates are switched on and green.

And that's it. Really - that's all there is to it. Your iPad will download any available update and apply it overnight while it's charging.
